CHAPTER 15: "What did that prison do to you, Son? This isn’t the Greg Smith I used to know. You’re ‘the Engineer,’ and I gave you that name myself. You had no boundaries when it came to making a deal. You were ferocious.”

“If prison taught me one thing, it’s that I don’t want to go back, and I needed to make some changes. The truth is that I’ve lived my whole life thinking that power and greed are the ingredients for a life well-lived. So have you. But there’s more. Something that guys like you and me lost somewhere along the line.”

“Don’t start bringing that sappy liberal bullshit into this office, Greg. I give piles of cash to charities. You’re the one who ensured that I am perceived as generous in the public eye. I fund hospitals, disease research centers, and summer camps for poor kids. There’s even a building named after me at my college alma mater that cost me millions. Rockwood Holdings and Dan Johnson are solid corporate citizens throughout this state.” Of course, his critics would argue that most of it was a front for his shady political activities.
